    The children were seated on chairs round a big table, and the writing was done on a slate with slate pencils.
    The teachers remained in the district as long as they lived, and were able to teach.

  2. No hedge schools existed in my district at any time, but there was a school at Drumcree, Delvin in 1830. It was called a "night" school locally. The school was held in the house of the teacher.
    Mr Murphy taught in the school. He was a native of the place. The pupils brought money or food every night to the teacher, and in this way they paid for the instruction they got.
