    oats and wheat were blown down and were destroyed by the rain that followed. There was a mission in Delvin at that time, and the "stalls" were blown down and a number of things broken. The storm lasted for twelve hours.

  2. Hedge schools never existed in my district, but, long ago, night schools were conducted in certain houses. The teachers were strangers, and they only used to lodge in the houses in the locality. the children had to bring a penny every night to the teachers as payment for the instruction they received.
    They taught English, Arithmetic, Grammar and Writing, but Irish was not taught or spoken by the master, and the pupils.
