  1. Long ago people used to have rush candles for lights at night. My mother has a grisset in which my grandfather John Fox used to make those candles. It is about a hundred years old. Long ago when the candles were not invented they used to make them out of rushes. My grandfather got the rushes and peeled off the skin leaving only one strip of it on. He would then dip them in grease in the grisset. They would have them in home made candlesticks which were generally made out of timber or out of turnips.
