    half of the crop was lost or rotted in the ground. At least 1/4 of what was left was required for seed for the coming (year) Spring. In the Spring of 1846 and 1847 the potatoes planted as seed were very small many of which failed to grow or what did grow produced a very weak crop. The corn which was grown by the Irish people of this age was aquired by the Land Lord as rent and sold in the English markets; thus leaving the potatoes as the food on which the people depended.
