  1. This poem was written by Patrick Elliott about a Temperance Meeting held on the Hill of Slane in 1914.
    I
    Ninteen fourteen is a date that shall not be forgot
    This great demonstration on this grand historic spot
    Where St. Patrick's blaze in former days, that blaze which burning still.
    Defied the Druids and Ruler then that lived on Tara's Hill.
    II
    It was our worthy priests that organised the meeting for that day.
    A fitting time, a fitting place and fitting words did say
    We were all proud to see the crowd of young men and maidens too
    And to strike a blow at Bacchus that monster to subdue.
    III
    The band so rare played on the square of the lovely town of Slane.
    Such grand selected music I long
