- I live in the townland of Lacken in the parish of Rathkenny, and in the Barony of Upper Slane. There are only three families in this townland which consist of fifteen families people. All the families bear different names and all the houses are slated. The townland of Lacken (Leacian) is so called because it is situated on the sides of hills. There are no old people living here and Irish is not spoken by anyone. Mr. Matthews and Mr. McEnrow often tell stories (in English) about their youth, and the happenings of that time.
Long ago the houses were more numerous here but nothing at all can be seen of their ruins. It is only the old people that can point out the sites, and tell of whole families that emigrated to America or elsewhere at the time of the "clearances." The local Big Houses of Tiernan, Hussey, and Blake gave very large employment but the change(continues on next page)- Collector
