  1. (continued from previous page)
    The wren, the wren,
    The King of all birds,
    On St Stephen's day,
He was caught in the furze.
    Up with the kettle,
    Down with the pan,
A penny or two to bury the wren.
    Although he is little,
    His family is great,
    Up with something,
    And give us a treat.
The 17th March being the feast of our national St (St Patrick) is not celebrated at the present day in the way it used to be, but it is far better as regards celebrations which pass of in a quiet manner. The day would not be well spent long ago unless one got well intoxicated to drown the shamrock which is also the national emblem. It is a very old custom to take a big batter on that day so as to drown the shamrock they are wearing.
