    There I heard a dismal groaning, a bewailing or bemoaning,
    Such a weary mortals utter when the heart within is sore,
    And I peer'd into that stable, but to fathom was unable
    The dark doubts which then beset me of the voice within the door
    Of that lone neglected out house, where I had not been before,
    For three months, perhaps, and more.

    And I grasped an old spade-handle, that I seldom touched before;
    "Wretch!" I cried, or vile intruder, tell me how it is that you dare
    Skulk about me house, to rob me?" and I further stoutly swore
    I should hand him to the barrack that is opposite my door,
    Just ten perches, and no more.
