  1. When the farmers have their cattle fat and fit for sale they usually bring them to a fair or market. Long ago there used to be two fairs held in this locality which took place at Ardamagh and at Carlanstown. The 19th November, was the big fair of Carlanstown and on that day the two fair greens, one each side of the road, would be filled with men and cattle, the latter sometimes driven by women. There used to be three fairs held annually in Carlanstown which fell on the following days, the 12th March, 1st May, and the 19th November. The two greens where the fairs were held were owned by a man named Genkins who lived in a two-storey house now owned by James Collins
