  1. In this country, a number of Festivals are held at various times throughout the year. These have probably come down from the old pagan times in Ireland and were great feasts in honour of some pagan Gods.
    Since the coming of St. Patrick however, these festivals are still celebrated but most of them are now connected with religious feasts, or events in the life of Our Lord. As for instance, Christmas Day and Easter.
    The great festivals are, - Christmas, Easter, May Eve, Hallow Eve, and St. Stephen's Day. Christmas is the most important feast of all. For weeks beforehand, great preparations are made, houses are decorated, wishes, cards, and presents are sent to friends at home and abroad.
    On Christmas Day itself, the turkey and plum-pudding are the chief item for dinner. On that day a family reunion takes place and each one tries to be in the old home for Christmas night.
