  1. There are several ghost stories told by the old people that are supposed to have happened in this neighbourhood. The one with the most resemblance of truth is a incident that happened about fifty years ago in a place called Drewstown in the parish of Girley. There is a big house, and wood estate, owned for generations by a protestant people named Mc Veigh. The story is, two young fellows named Larry Mc Cormac, and Jack Kiernan from the bog of Chamberlanstown, whent out one night with nets and a dog to poach rabbits on this land a short time after an old mistress of the place had died. They set their nets and sent out the dog to beat. He started off, and returned in a short time shivering and refused to go out any more. Kiernan then went out himself, and saw an object in the form of a woman and a dog beside it. Keirnan was a man who was not easy frightened, and said, if you are the divil I will beat in the rabbits. With that the whole thing turned into a flame and flahed by with an awful noise, and stinch. What leaves this story believed, is, at the end of the field, at a place called The Doran's Garden two large stones standing ten feet in hight, known as the Drews Alters were levelred on top of each other that same night. One of these men is still living but Jack Kirenan is dead.
