  1. The peasants in this district begin planting their potatoes in Spring. The Urban Council give out free land to the poor people of Kells, and supply them with manure, seed, spades and get the land ploughed for them. When the people clean the land they immediately divide it into drills. Then in June or July they spray the potatoes and this spraying protects them from disease, harmful insects, and many other things which if they were let live would destroy the whole crop.
