  1. This is used in the north of Ireland round the coast of Donegal. When a storm is rising the fishermen shake this emblem in the face of the wind and this is supposed to calm it.

  2. When an unbaptised child is being taken to the church to be baptised a cinder is rolled up in its baby robe, and a red cord tied round the child's neck.
    Those who meet the child should say "God bless you". Not doing this would mean that you cast on the baby "The evil eye"
