  1. Long ago the farmers used to make straw crosses every year on St Brigid's Eve, and sometimes they would have thirty of them on the inside of the thatch, and on the cow shed's to keep the cows from all diseases. They would never take down them only when the house was going to be knocked down.
    They would chop the crosses up very small, and mix them with oats, and give them to the cows to keep them from taking the disease of blackleg.
    On St. Patrick's Day all the men would be drunk, and these that were not drunk would let on they were in case the people would think they were not drowning the shamrock.

  2. On searching for matter for this composition I was greatly surprised to discover that there were chair-makers in Church Lane named Mullen's and that I am a descendant of theirs
    Tallow candles were made at Murtagh's in New Market Street
