  1. The Rowleys were good landlords. They came in Cromwell's time. Mr. Rowley would wait if the rent were not ready till the next year. The first "gale-day" was the day on which the first-half-year rent was due ad the second "gale-day" was the day on which the second half-year's rent was due.
    The first Rowley was one of Cromwell's soldiers. Some say the Rowley's family were originally blue dyers. Mr. Rowley's butler wanted to be priest but Rowley threatened to evict his father and mother if he tried to carry out his intentions.
