  1. There were several chapels in this district in the Penal times = Ardbraccan, Allenstown, Doramstown, Grange, Kilsaney, and Ongenstown. Most of these chapels were built of mud walls and thacthed. Ardbraccan was stone built and when the present Protestant church was being built the walls of the old church were pulled down. Even the tomb stones were taken away to help to build the Protestant church.
    In the Penal days Mass was celebrated in these chapels when things were quiet but when the Priest hunters were active then the Priest would have to go on the run. Word would be sent around to the people where to meet the Priest on the following Sunday morning and mass would be celebrated at the back of a ditch in a wood or behind a rock.
    The famous Father Barnewall laboured here at that time and he frequently had to disguise himself in order to get away from the blood hounds. Mr Waller of Allenstown was always ready to give him shelter and frequently sent him information when the Priest hunters were about.
