  1. Down to very recent times the corner near the Mercy Convent was called Cregan's Corner. A publican named Cregan lived here in 1798. He was from his house the whiskey was sent that intoxicated the poor Croppies when camping on Tara Hill. A member of the Murphy family who lived at Kilcairne is said to have been responsibe for this. He sent word to Lord Fngal who came with his band and massacred the croppies.
