  1. I.
In a cottage by the twilight,
Stand a soldier and a maid.
Solemn words are now being spoken,
For his country needs his aid.
Down his cheeks the tears are falling
    Trembling, she bids him stay
Frmly, steadily, comes the answer -
    "Annie dear, I'm called away".
    Chorus:
"Good - bye Annie, good - bye darling,
I'd have loved with you to stay,
'Tis decreed that I must leave you
    Annie dear, i'm called away".
