  1. The cause of the great famine was that the potato crop failed, for at that time potatoes was the chief food of the people. The people used to eat them three or four times a day. The food they had after-wards was indian meal porridge and turnips sliced into it. The indian meal was half-crown a stone and a mans wages would be only ten pence a day.
