  1. The "Great Famine" occurred in the year '46 47. It was better known as the black '47. So great was the want of food that they rats and grass rather than die of hunger.
    It effected this district very much. The district was very thickly populated before that time, but thousands emigrated to America to escape hunger and starvation.
    There are sites still pointed out in Rathmore and in the Hill O'Ward, which was then occupied, but now they are in ruins.
