  1. A football math was played in O'Growney's field, Martinstown, in July 1893 between Athboy 'Rovers' and Trim 'Volunteers'. There were eight men on each side. The teams were picked according to each man's ability. Trim "Volunteers" won by two goals. Athboy "Rovers" score is not known.
    The ball was often kicked from field to field for a good distance but never to another townland. the players wore a short-sleeved shirt striped with each team's colours, and a short black linen trousers, black stockings to their knees, and football boots.
