  1. Thomas Caffery a native of Kilmessan Co Meath, born about the year 1847 or 1850. In his youthful days he was a great hurler and footballer. He was a noted wrestler. He won many prizes for his athletic feats. He could shear sheep with both hands, mow an acre of meadow in a day, carry a barrel of wheat under his arm, and throw great weights.
    His feats in shearing sheep were well known. An Agricultural Show was held in Navan some years ago. A firm introduced a new electric shearing machine. They challenged any man to shear a sheep in the same time as the machine. Mr Caffrey started to shear one sheep at the same time as the machine started. Mr Caffrey was finished first.
    He was a great talker and walker. He used to tell stories of the time when the bridge known as the "Hungry Bridge" was being built near the village of
