  1. The Dunboyne estate to Maynooth college under circumstances of the most unusual kind. John Butler, Lord Dunboyne studied for priesthood as a young man but owing to the loss of an eye his ordination was delayed until this canonical impediment had been removed by a dispensation from Rome. After some years he was appointed to the See of Cork over which he reigned as Bishop for twenty-three years. On the death of his nephew Pierce Butler eleventh Baron Dunboyne in the year 1785 Bishop Butler succeeded to the title and estates. Thereupon
