    Kilmoon gets its name from St Moon who was a Briton and who accompanied St. Brendan of Clonfert on his return to Ireland from Brittony.
    In the Four Masters mention is made of the many Abbots who died in Kilmoon i.e. 804. Maelforthargh, Abbot of Kilmoon died 809.
