  1. There are fiftheen old houses in this village. All of them are over one hundred and thirty years built.
    There are three thatched houses in Baltrasna.
    We lived in one of the old thatched houses and every year Willie Bates employed Mick Macken to thatch the house.
    He grew his own wheaten straw and sold it to Bobbets and Rooneys for their own thatching.
    In each of these houses there was a bed beside the fire which was called the "settle bed."
    Agnes Skelly and Judy Farrell have got "settle beds" still.
    None of the old people ever remember the fire being in the middle of the floor, but they had open fireplaces.
