  1. Roads The roads in this district are mostly named after the places to which they
    lead from Ashbourne.
    We say the Dublin road, Slane road, Milltown Rd and the
    Donaghmore Rd. Castle Street is an
    exception . As its name implies a castle
    that once overlooket the Broad-medow
    river and this castle is shown on
    old map though no trace on trace of it
    remains at present not have any of the oldest residents any recollection of its existence.
    it was owned however by a man named Segrave who at the battle of Clontibret in 1595 engaged Hugh O'Neill in single combat which proved to be his last flight, for O'neill stabbed him.
    Segrave was a man of giant stature. His castle was probably destroyed by Cromwell on his mar- ch to drogheda .
    The Dublin road is the oldest in the district and originally it went through Killegland and joined the
