  1. Hedge schools were the schools that were in Ireland before the National schools were established.
    The Hedge school that was in Batterstown before the National school was built was standing with the chapel where the pump is standing now.
    The School and the Chapel were both thatched.
    The last school-master's name that taught in the Hedge school was Mr Caffrey.
    He never taught Irish but spoke it to an old man called Mr Tormey who lived beside the school.
    The children wrote on slates and pencils and I do not know if they had a blackboard or not.
