At the time of '98 the Croppies were retreating from the Battle of Tara...

At the time of '98 the Croppies were retreating from the Battle of Tara they sought shelter from a man named Lawless at Bogganstown, Culmullen. He gave them shelter in his barn and when they were asleep he went for the Yeoman and got them all murdered in cold blood for the sake of Saxon shillings and to the present day a man named Lawless of Meath cannot enter Wexford without disdain. It is assumed that the blood of the Croppies of '98 flowed down the road and therefore it is called the Red Road. The Red Road runs from Batterstown to the Hatchet.
    Brian Smyth 3rd November 1927.
I got this from my father, John Smyth, Age 45, Batterstown, Co. Meath.
