“Another native of the Old Road named Cullen...”
Another native of the Old Road named Cullen had a habit of taking an occasional bathe in the Boyne near Kilcarne Bridge, about 50 years ago.
This Sunday evening he was drowned.
Some time afterwards his widow was in bed one night when she heard a knock at the window.
She asked who was there and a voice replied that it was her dead husband's spirit.
Oh! said she can I do anything for you.
Yes said he. Give me a pair of new boots and 5/- for a mass and hand it out to me now.
Cullen had recently purchased a new pair of boots. He had a chum called Peter Funn who coveted them and got the boots and 5/- in this way. Mrs Reilly saw a funny sight in Navan one day. A man named Mc.Govern and hid wife lived in Kilcarne. They made a sort of sugar stick or candy which they used to sell on the street.
This day McGovern took a drop too much. His wife a huge woman came along gathered him into her capacious check apron and carried him home.
