- There is a very old churchyard about 1/4 mile from the school called Kilcarne churchyard. There are the remains of an old church there too which is a ruin since Cromwellian times. Some of the old headstones have fallen, others have sunk into the ground. While the inscriptions are very hard to decipher.
They are all very old dating from the year 1709. On the opposite side is a rough drawing at the back of one of these old tombstones.
It might be interesting on (?) of the quaint epitaph.
This tombstone and two others belong to a family called O'Brien of Oldtown - about 1 mile from the churchyard. At that time they spelled their name BRYAN.
The other tombstones are dated 1776 and 1817.
The designs on all the old stones are much the same some in Latin and some in English.
The figure I is made like J.
People are still buried in this old churchyard.
The coffin is carried 3 times around the ruins of the old church before being buried.
