He challenged Kane to wrestle. Kane accepted the challenge on condition that the soldiers maintained order (kept the ring) Bolton agreed. They met one Sunday morning on the North Quay, Drogheda where the Mayoralty Rooms now stand and these the words which I heard from the lips of an old man - an eye-witness - "Kane flung him out of his hands." (Told by Patk. Carton).
Some time later there was an attempt made to plunder the home of a farmer - Warren of Leggenhall (1 1/2 miles from Greenanstown). The door being a very strong one and in addition heavily barricaded, the robbers were unable to effect an entrance. They retired from the house and going in the direction of Bellewstown they found Kane lying by the side of the road under the influence of drink. They induced him to return with them to Warren's. They gave him a sledge and with one blow he smashed in the door. "Bravo Kane" said one of the robbers.
After this he was obliged to leave the district (go on the shun!). He reached Dublin, where he procured work. He lodged in Mary's Lane. Wrestling was the chief pastime of the peasantry in those days. There was a Kildare man who stood the Park for several Sundays and(continues on next page)
