    After the famine when cholera raged in Co Meath...

    by the disease, just as he was retiring for the night. His mother had one stocking off, which she was darning. Throwing the work out of her hands she got him to bed, and from then till dawn of day she worked feverishly applying hot "stupes" to the sufferer, never getting time to put on her other stocking or shoe, till at last as the end of the long cold night, the turning point was reached and sleep came to relieve the pain tortured patient. His life was saved, but his poor mother never was strong again
