Groundsell, wild celery and Brook Lime was a very successful cure for diseased kidneys. Swellings.
Hemlock though a very poisonous herb was a great cure for swellings. - A receipt for nettle beer.First young green nettles are gathered and cleaned and boiled until tender.
Then strain and heat the liquid again and to each pint add sugar and a piece of yeast about the size of a wallnut and also the juice of lemons.
It is left to ferment for about a week in an earthen crock.
It is then bottled and cealed and used as required.
It was considered a very refreshing drink and also an excellent blood purifier. V Quinn- Collector
