  1. In olden times people made medicine and ointments from herbs. The roots of the pile plant which grows along the ditches were washed and boiled and taken in a glass of new milk in the spring.
The leaves of the plant were bruised and made into an oinment. In the spring boiled mettles were strained and the liquid taked to purify the blood. Another herb was sorrel used for stopping cuts from bleeding.

A Prayer to cure the tooth-ache
As Peter sat on a marble stone
Who passed by but Our Saviour alone
"Peter" He said "Why do you weep"
"Because My Lord my tooth doth ache"
"Rise up Peter for My sake
And you shall be cured of the toothache.
