- 241A True StoryDuring the Penal Days in Ireland Oliver Cromwell was invited to a great feast in Bar - Meath castle. When he arrived at the castle Lord Bellew brought him to a large banquet hall. There they sat together at table and chatted for a long time. Suddenly Cromwell happened to look out the window and saw a young priest walking up and down the lawn. He asked the Lord was that a young catholic priest and Lord Bellew said "It is, he is my nephew." Well said Cromwell "I made a vow leaving England that I would behead every catholic priest I met." He told the Lord to call him in. He did so. When the Priest came in Cromwell asked him did he know who he was. The priest answered "You are Oliver Cromwell." Cromwell said "Are you not afraid I will behead you." Well said the priest "If you take my head you cannot take my soul." "I see you are a plucky young man" said Cromwell "But if you are able to answer me one question I will spare your head." "If I am able to, I will" said the priest, "And if not you can have my head."
