  1. Once upon a time there was a man and he had a son. This day they were going for coal in a handcart. They came to St Mary's Bridge and the father standing too long at the bridge, the boy said, Draw-da. At the same time there was a well-learned man passing by and heard what the child said. He thought to himself it would be a suitable name for the town. So I think that's how Drogheda got its name.
