been migrating to America, from the village, and there is scarcely a family in the parish who have not relations there.

Farmers still collect at cross-roads, as they did in former times, to buy or sell cattle, here there came a man known as a "cattle blocker", who helped to make bargains among the buyers and sellers.
Toll was paid at markets, and collected after the market began, by a man who went round to each man on the market.
When goods were given without ready payment, they were known as goods given on "tick" or on "Strap".
