    of Corliss.
    Collon derives its name for Coill án the district of the hazels as there were many hazel woods in the district in former times. The place is entirely surrounded by the Ferrard Hills. It is said that Collon is on a hill and in a hollow because no matter what direction one approaches the village hills have to be climbed, and when the village is sighted, it lies in the hollow below them, Mount Oriel, the highest hill in the district, is crowned by a wood, known to many as Collon Grove, and lies to the north west of the village. On the west is Carrick-ma-keogh another wooded hill, and off the Slane road is "Balnagregha" a hill also with a wood. On Strinagh Hill is Bellew's Wood
