of Slane, in a large field called the fair Green, and it is held there still. At the fair cattle, horses, pigs, and sheep were sold.
When the animal was sold the buyer spitted on his hand and gave a slap to the seller on the open hand. Then the bargain was closed. When this was done both parties generally took a drink of beer.
A few fields away from it is the hill of Slane, where St Patrick lit the Paschal Fire, also within view is Slane castle on the Boyne.
