- Bird Love
Birds are very plentiful in this area. This is mainly due to the fact that a very large part of the land is under tillage - at least 60% - thus providing food for own feathered friends, while the whitethorn hedgs and numerous small woods provide them with ample shelter and suitable nesting places. As this parish is founded on the East by the sea we have also as visitors the many seafowl common to the Irish coast, particularly in Winter.
All species of native land birds are represented here from the wren to the crow. Some of course are more numerous than others. Crows for example are extremely plentiful, much more so that thirty years ago I am informed. This is due to the fact they they are not shot or otherwise destroyed as formerly farmers realising that the damage done by them to crops, such as corn, is more than compensated for by the many injurious grubs and insects consumed by them on the farm.(continues on next page)
