  1. Long ago the people their candles at home. These were made of common soft rushes. The rushes were cut in summer and autumn. Then they were thrown in water to prevent them shrinking and to make them easier to peel. They were peeled and dried and after that they were dipped in melted tallow and left it out to dry. This was done two or three times. They were dipped in a long narrow jug with two handles on it, and so they were called dips. One when dipped and ready for use was tow or more feet long and would give light for three quarters of an hour.
