- In the district there are two ruined castles which were built during the time of the Normans. It was in the district about one hundred and fifty uears. One of the castles is called Dunmahon castle and the other Heynestown castle.
Once upon a time shortly after Cromwell landed in Ireland, Dunmahon castle was besieged by Cromwells officers and soldiers, led by Captain Townley. In this castle their lived Fitzwalter, his wife, and an only daughter Eva. One Sunday morning as Mass was going on in the castle Townley asked Eva for the the key of the castle.
