  1. A legend which is still preserved in this part of the district is that of a treasure which is supposed to be hidden somewhere in the grave-yard of Newtown, Mountbagnal.
    During the early part of the eighteenth century when the Penal Laws were in existance the priests were forbidden to say mass in the churches and the only thing they could do therefore was offer up the mass in secret places among the hills or in the
