- The landlords in the district long ago were Lord Rossmore and the Earl of Dartry. They lived about 150 years ago and the Rossmore family still lives in the district. They were always looked upon as being very harsh It was a common thing for people to be put out of their homes, sometimes for not paying rent and saying bad language to the landlord Very often spite of the landlord against the people caused them to leave their homes. When these poor people were left homeless they seldom looked for another house but went to America.
The landlords bought their estates, some mortgaged them. This lands was then divided into farms and given to tenants who were charged a high rent. They could not do as they liked but were subject to the landlords who had full authority. Often tenants were fined heavy for trespassing on passes etc.
Long ago tithe money had to be paid. According to the number of acres a man had he had to pay 2sh per acre. This was paid to the church. The people resented this collection as many of them were Catholics(continues on next page)- Collector
