  1. Chair making is still an industry in west Clare. The frames of the chairs are made from rough wood hewn from suitable branches of trees The frames are strong and held together by rungs which are split at the ends and plugged to keep them firm The chair is sold without any seat The seat is made either from coil (coir) yarn or from a sugan which is made by twisting straw or coarse hay with a twisting bow. In making the sugan the twisting bow is held and twisted generally by a young person The man has a heap of straw by his side.
The person with the twisting bow keeps twisting and moving away and the man making the sugan keeps adding straw until the sugan is the required length.
