    Before the Famine the people of Ireland lived mainly on potatoes and the stapll food of the majority of the people was three meals of potatoes...

    used to be practically clearaed of cabbage but on the following morning it was filled again. It was called the mushroom garden for several years afterwards. The owner prospered and his family are respected there yet. The other man set his dogs at a poor beggar man who was taking a few potatoes that were scattered in his garden after the Spring plowing. Next year all his crops failed his cattle died and in a few years he died a pauper in the workhouse.

    These people were called paupers. At seven o'clock every morning these people went over into the Rhine picking sea-grass, periwinkles, and limpets.
