  1. Basket Making.
    Basket making is a very old trade in Miltown Malbay.
    First the rods are cut when the moon is dark in November.
    The strong ones are sorted from the weak ones. When that is done a big sod is cut out in the fields and it is brought into the barn. Then the rods are stuck upright into the sod - as many as would make the frame of the basket.
    Four strong rods are put at the four corners of the basket. Then the weaker rods are woven back and forth.
    When that is done the bottom of the basket is woven in the same way.
    Then the basket is drawn off the sods and the ends are cut inside and outside.
