- Long ago, the chief thing the people used to eat was porridge, and the chief thing to drink was butter milk. The people, then, were very strong men, because porridge and butter-milk are very nourishing. The rich people had meat only once a week and that was Sunday. The poor people used to have meat only once a year, and that was Christmas Day. The rich and poor people, long ago use to eat coarse brown bread. If any one were caught in a turnip garden long ago, they would be fined.
