  1. The Village of Clare Castle was the Ancient capital of the County Clare. The Castle was visited by Red Hugh O'Donnell when he collected tribute from the chiefs of Thomond.
    On that occasion a Schoolmaster who was taken as prisoner gave in verse such a glowing testimony to Red Hugh's valour and the bravery of his ancestors, that he was set free, and no Tribute was expected from the chieftain his master.
    The Local Blacksmith Mac Mahon charged 5/= a shoe for shoeing the horse of a Cromwellian trooper
