  1. Riddles were very popular especially among the country folk of Ireland long ago. They tell those riddles or conundrums when sitting round the fired in the evenings and provided much sport for the younger people. This custom is still kept up and here are some of them.
    Q Black and white and read all over?
    A A newspaper
    Q Why is an echo like a lady?
    A When she will always have the last word.
    Q What goes up when the rain comes down?
    A An umbrella
    Q What resembles half the moon?
    A The other half.
    Q Jenny inside the wall and Jenny inside the wall if you touch her she'll bit you?
    A A nettle
    Q If it takes twenty minutes to wash a child what will it take to dry her?
    A A towel
    Q Who is he that never washed his face?
    A The clock.
